Just when you're sure of one
You find she's gone and made a change"

QUESTION/High Fidelity

Q: Which musicians of the last two decades have had the most lasting impact on music as we know it today?
I stole that from LJ, quite subjective, of course. (btw can I go back to writing about subjective topics and having to do papers and such. organic chemistry is not for me. (side note: need it for grad school pre-reqs. boooo) GIVE ME ART HISTORY OR GIVE ME DEATH!!!)
A: coming later

and last night I watched high fidelity for the first time. THE FIRST TIME. why now?
maybe I should organize my music auto-biographical...
although I definitely DO NOT have as much of an extensive collection as him

"Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

mm good goood GOOD GOOD movie. I swear everytime I watch a john cusack movie, I fall in love with him. then I forget about him, watch another one of his movies and fall back in love. ah john cusack.

edit: stop following me around High Fidelity!!!

I just watched it for what seemed like the fourth time this month. oh hulu, you make my love for john cusack exponentially grow.

favorite book...quote

"Like most of the others, I was a seeker, a mover, a malcontent, and at times a stupid hell-raiser. I was never idle long enough to do much thinking, but I felt somehow that my instincts were right. I shared a vagrant optimism that some of us were making real progress, that we had taken an honest road, and that the best of us would inevitably make it over the top.
At the same time, I shared a dark suspicion that the life we were leading was a lost cause, that we were all actors, kidding ourselves along on a senseless odyssey. It was the tension between these two poles--a restless idealism on one hand and a sense of impending doom on the other--that kept me going."

Anthony Dominick Benedetto

ahhhh.
so awesome. he's stillllll got it.
He sang a crap load of songs for more than an hour.
he was bee-boppin' around the stage
HE'S EIGHTY-THREE YEARS OLD!!!!!

he did a little shimmy and said "i just got back from Brazil..." haha
he played Smile, that's all I care about. One of my first blogs was just the lyrics to that song.
I LOVE that song.
and about 3/4 through 'The Good Life' he stopped and dedicated it to lady gaga. haaa. big laugh from the crowd (who knew who she was)
I wasn't the youngest person there as there was a 12 year old girl sitting behind me. yesssss. but still, the average age was around 67. cool. Still sipped a strawberry daiquiri

my one issue. the freakin bass player and incredibly awesome drummer only got one shout out. ONE. the bloody piano player and guitar player (granted, still very good) got a shout out almost every freakin' song. Why must percussion be left out? If there was no percussion, there would be no song.
oy.

smile.

CD players

remember back in the day. you'd pop in your favorite cd and listen to it from beginning to end. If you were lucky, your cd player had a shuffle mode, which mine did. But you still listened to the cd in order of the song. such greatness.
I used to fall asleep to either Michelle Branch or Alicia Keys then in my gangster phase it was 50 cent. yea I fell asleep to that cd. When I came home from school I'd pop in Hot Fuss (then kaiser chiefs, the cribs, bloc party...ah my british invasion period...) and listen to that over and over while I did my homework. I should do that again. Except on my fancy-schmancy ipod that currently has 4732 songs on it. I'm building up a collection. I'm spotty in some areas.
Oh that Michelle Branch cd...one song came up on shuffle. still brings back memories. I played that OVER AND OVER AND OVER when I went to sleep. I still listen to Alicia Keys (of course, she's the best) so her music doesn't bring too much of a memory back since it is still ongoing.

I think I'm the only one under 30 that still buys cds. I love them. I need something tangible. Who doesn't love having a collection of cds around your room. I use them in my car all the time. My car is from 2004 (its sixth birthday is on labor day. aw. they grow up so fast...) so it's not one of those cool ones with built in mp3 player cords so the sound quality when I play my ipod isnt the greatest. Plus there's nothing better than popping in a cd and blasting it as you drive around.

back to cd players. I did see someone on the bus a while ago (I can't remember where. maybe tempe, maybe d.c.) who still had a cd player. Right now (and from forever on), its definitely worth it to buy an ipod, especially when you commute (playing solitaire on my ipod saved my life last summer!) I know some people can't afford one since the classic ipod style price hovers at $250. Although the size is increasing ENORMOUSLY. I got a new ipod two years ago (I believe, I had to get a new one because some cretin stole mine during class...wtf...anyway it was dying, the hold button was failing) The "new" ipod I got was 80 gb. 80 GB!! that's still insane. They don't even make that size anymore. I think (THINK) the lowest size is now 120 gb. or maybe 160. That's the size of my computer hard drive now! insaaaaane. If you have a computer with 160 gb you can no way fill up a 160 gb ipod, that's for sure.
how the hell did I get onto the topic of ipod size....
TANGENTTTTTTT

bottom line.
cd players are cute and memorable. It reminds me of being 13. aw.
awkward.
I remember taking road trips and having to decide which cds I would want for my journey. poor other cds that didn't get taken. I'd end up taking wayyyyy too many or not enough and be wanting to listen to certain music and crap not having the cd with me.

yea.

p.s. going to see TONY BENNETT tonight. <333333333
omgggggggggg tony bennetttttt
